I’m inspired by the dedication my son has for the game of golf. Every morning starts with golf drills and every night ends with them, as well. His social schedule revolves around golf– working at the course, practicing locally several days a week, and ensuring he gets in a practice round at upcoming Prestige Tour courses. The night before a big tournament, a few standard things occur in our home–we make sure he has all his gear (including his wedge off the back porch where he hits balls each night in the dark) and we most certainly have Good Good playing on the TV while we make dinner in preparation for the good, good day of golf that awaits him!
He was raised around golf as my husband is the General Manager of a local course (where we met in college!), but truth be told when he was younger, he was often just as interested in the fish in the course ponds as he was his putting game, because he is equally passionate about fishing.
But something happened when we got home from attending the 2019 Valero Texas Open. We’d been going every year for a while, but that year at the age of 12, something got sparked inside Hudson and he suddenly became very interested in improving his game and pursuing a life that involved playing on tour.
I love that it came about so organically for him. Many might assume my husband, being the GM of a course and PGA pro himself, might has coerced him into the game. But quite the opposite– we introduced him to it, sure and gave him access to some of the best courses and equipment, but really let Hudson (and our daughter) chase their own interests.
For Hudson, this meant fishing, basketball, occasional golf and mountain bike riding. That is, until that spring of 2019 when all focus turned to golf.
He is a great player– dedicated, patient, mature, never one to make excuses, and someone who’s in constant pursuit of learning more about the game while studying advice from those whose footsteps he hopes to follow in.
I could not be more proud of him, regardless of score or rank, but I often tell friends and family “you might want to get his autograph now…”
