In my opinion, golf is the most fantastic sport to introduce a child to! You’re out in the elements, meeting people from all walks of life and all ages and experiences; not to mention, it requires patience, grace, dedication and manners! You learn rules and etiquette, all while having a blast with old friends or enjoying interesting conversations with new people you randomly got paired with for the round!
I knew I wanted my kids involved in the game, in whatever capacity they chose, so we wasted no time introducing them! My husband is the GM at the course we met at in college, so naturally we took advantage of that connection and took both my son and daughter to the course a ton when they were young! They’d help dust the pro shop, clean the cart barn and of course, their favorite chore was raking the “sand boxes.”
Some of our fondest memories are made on the course–we let the kids pick the playlist and tee it up! My daughter and I have a tendency to skip putting because we’re too engaged in girl talk, but we love the challenge of scooping up a ball with the backside of the putter!
As the kids have grown, my daughter’s interests have shifted mostly to dance while my son is a die-hard, avid, incredibly dedicated player of the game, all on his own accord (more on that here!).
Whether you play for fun or competitively, there is no better sport for getting your entire family outdoors together and it’s a sport everyone can participate in, regardless of ability or age, so it’s a tradition you can start and maintain for all your years together!
